Archangel is an archangel first mentioned in the Book of Tobit and in 1 Enoch, both estimated to date from between the 3rd and 2nd century BCE. He is venerated in Judaism, Christianity (including the Roman Catholic Church, Eastern Catholic Churches, Eastern Orthodox Church, Oriental Orthodox Church, Lutheran Churches, Anglican Communion, and Methodism), and Islam. In the apocryphal Old Testament Book of Tobit, he is described as the one who, in human disguise and under the name of Azarias, accompanied Tobias in his adventurous journey and conquered the demon Asmodeus. Raphael is known for his role in healing and is associated with various attributes, such as holding a bottle or flask, walking with Tobias, sounding a trumpet, and carrying a fish or a staff. He is the patron saint of travelers, lovers, the youth, finding one's spouse, ordained marriage, mental health, healing, guardian angels, shepherds, pharmacists, druggists, nurses, physicians, illness, eye afflictions, the sick, the blind, and against nightmares. In Christian tradition, he is also believed to be the angel who stirred waters in the Pool of Bethesda in John 5–4, and in Islam, his name is Israfil, understood to be the unnamed angel of Quran 6, standing eternally with a trumpet to his lips, ready to announce the Day of Judgment. Archangel Raphael is also associated with healing and is considered the Master Healing Angel, with connections to colors, crystals, and roles in spiritual practices.
He is the subject of various prayers and novenas, including the St. Raphael the Archangel Novena, which focuses on healing and finding a spouse.
